"...ordinary men and woman may often feel unmotivated to exert their
citizenship either because they cannot tell the difference between
different alternatives, or because they have lost faith in the political
classes, or because they feel that the really important issues are not
in their power to decide." Patrick Aylwin Azocar
An Introduction to the Campaign
The argument can be made that this is a rare moment in our history, a unique opportunity to use our resources, power, and American ingenuity to help keep our country afloat in turbulent seas. The “time” can not only be referenced by the nature of our national concerns, but because the world is arriving at conclusions that no longer necessarily require our participation. In essence, America needs to become more certain about itself and the world, while simultaneously becoming more responsive to both.
The likelihood of this happening, the closing of the “gaps” of what is and what ought to be, of what we can and cannot do, of what we practice and what we preach, remains however subject to question. In short, what this will take, and whether we have the capacity to actualize what this will take involve very serious considerations.
In this light, it is being suggested that at the heart of any of our legitimate and long term endeavors pointed at the difficulties we face lies education – education of the public that can allow us to become better, more aware citizens of the world. No less than the philosophers, political leaders, economic experts, and policy strategists, past and present, have made the significance of this point clear. In this context, we must become a society more in tune with national and international citizenship, and education is the vehicle by which this can happen.
What you will read and hear via this site is focused on these two points – citizenship and education. It brings to the forefront our need to become better versed in the political and economic variables – the ideologies if you will – by which we and the rest of the world frame our day to day existence. Concepts like democracy, capitalism, communism, socialism must become a regular part of our dialogue. The principles tied to liberal, conservative and alternative political views must be clearly defined accordingly. And this should be, no this must be, taken up as a mandate within our educational processes.
Please take this moment to look further into what the CIC is bringing to the table in terms of its grass-roots, non-partisan, educationally based effort. It is the hope of our organization that this effort, in its small but significant way, can help in the maintenance of our country’s role in a rapidly changing world order.
